UNC Chip VR Experience
Introduction
The Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP) Visible Human Project is an educational VR experience created for students to explore detailed data sets of cross-sectional photographs of the human body.
Overall Goal:
The objective was to create an engaging VR experience for students that had little to no knowledge of how to use a VR system. With this tool, students would be able to learn about the entire human anatomy by viewing internal organs, single cross-sectional slices, and the visible human data set assembled in layers to create a 3D human body.
Overview
Problem:
VR can be overly complicated for non-technical student which was the biggest user pain point encountered. The detailed data sets of the human body created a lot of information that needed to be clear for students to understand.
Solution:
With research, testing, and refinement, a simplified yet engaging tool with minimal controller interaction was created to let the student focus on learning about the human body.
Process
I heavily researched VR methods and VR focused user patterns. From this research, I mapped out the user flow and controller interactions for the Oculus Rift. I sketched out wireframes before prototyping interactions and interfaces for testing. After testing and making iterations, I created visual designs and assets to deliver to development.
